Interactive Ads for FAST Platforms and Streaming Apps
How FAST platforms and owned streaming apps add pause, contextual and interactive ads, and what channel owners on third-party platforms can do.
Interactive ads for FAST channels are nonlinear, pause and interactive units that render inside the streaming app while the channel keeps playing. They add inventory without adding breaks. Because the units are rendered by an SDK in the app, the deployment belongs to whoever controls the app: a FAST platform or an owned-and-operated streaming service.

Who can deploy interactive ads on FAST channels?
The company that controls the streaming app can deploy them. SDK-rendered ads run inside an app, so the buyer is a FAST platform or a publisher with its own streaming app.
This matters because FAST distribution is split. A channel owner may run its channel on its own app. It may also distribute the same feed through third-party FAST services, such as Samsung TV Plus, The Roku Channel and Pluto TV. Those services control their own apps.
A channel owner cannot install the StreamLayer SDK inside a third-party platform's app. On those platforms, it has two honest options:
- Work with the platform. The platform can deploy the StreamLayer SDK in its app and offer interactive units across its channels, including yours.
- Use Interactive SSAI where the platform app supports it. Your SSAI spots keep running as they do today. The interactive layer needs the platform's app to render it, so this also requires the platform's participation.
On its own app, a channel owner can deploy every format described here. Our earlier article on FAST monetization with SGAI and interactive ads covers the same point in more detail.
How do contextual moments work in linear FAST programming?
StreamLayer can activate nonlinear units at chosen points in the programming, while the channel keeps playing. The units appear around relevant moments or lulls rather than inside a break.
Moment Ads support presentation formats such as Overlay, Side-Bar, L-Bar, Frame and PiP. Ad units include Standard Interactive, Lower Third, Trivia, Poll and Shoppable. On a sports FAST channel, units can also show live data such as scores and stats. See Moment Ads.
Activations can be automatic or manual. Automatic activations use the Trigger Engine with contextual triggers, rules and timed metadata supplied by the app. Manual activations come from StreamLayer Studio or connected workflows. For a sports channel, Moment Intelligence can identify opportunities from live game context. Publisher rules still decide which opportunities become ads.
For ideas on matching units to content, see contextual advertising content opportunities.
How do pause ads work on FAST and VOD?
Pause Ads appear when a viewer pauses, after a publisher-defined delay of one to five seconds, and close when playback resumes. They apply wherever the app lets viewers pause.
VOD libraries are a practical starting point, because pausing is standard behavior in on-demand players. On linear FAST channels, pause ads apply only where the player supports pausing the channel.
Formats are Full-screen, Overlay and Side-Bar. Types are Standard, Sports Stats, Trivia and Poll, and Shoppable. Creative uses still imagery or subtle, silent ambient motion. Actions include CTA buttons, QR codes, send-to-phone or email, shopping flows and an in-app browser.
Pause Ads can be sold direct, through private marketplace deals, or programmatically through configured SSP and DSP partners. See Pause Ads.
How does Interactive SSAI work with existing FAST ad breaks?
Interactive SSAI adds a synchronized interactive layer to video spots that your SSAI provider already stitches. The SSAI setup and the ad break stay as they are.
Many FAST channels are assembled from existing libraries and use server-side ad insertion for their breaks. For example, AWS documents that MediaTailor channel assembly builds linear channels from existing VOD content. AWS adds that it works with MediaTailor ad insertion or any SSAI service (AWS documentation).
With Interactive SSAI, the SSAI provider keeps stitching and delivering the video ad. Timed metadata markers trigger a StreamLayer layer rendered by the SDK. Formats are a Bottom Banner Overlay over the lower part of the ad, or a Squeezeback in Side-Bar or L-Bar layouts, where the app resizes the player.
The interactive layer can be personalized by geography, segment or customer status, even when the stitched video is the same for everyone. See Interactive SSAI.
How do you measure interactive ads on FAST?
StreamLayer Studio reports on the campaigns it runs. Interactive units add viewer actions, such as CTA selections and QR code use, to delivery reporting.
For Interactive SSAI, the SSAI provider still handles delivery of the video spot. StreamLayer reporting covers the interactive layer that runs with it. Decide with advertisers which measures define success before launch.
StreamLayer does not promise specific CPMs or revenue gains. Results depend on audience, demand, creative and the controls you set.
What is a sensible first pilot for a FAST platform?
Start narrow, with one app, one or two formats and clear success measures. A focused pilot shows value quickly and keeps engineering work small.
- Pick one device platform. Choose the one with the most viewing hours in your app. StreamLayer documents SDKs at docs.streamlayer.io for iOS, Android, React Native, Web, tvOS, Android TV and Google TV, Roku, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Hisense VIDAA and Xbox. Amazon Fire TV and Vizio are also supported today.
- Start with Pause Ads on VOD. The host app supplies pause and resume signals, which keeps the first integration contained.
- Add one contextual format on a few channels. A Lower Third or L-Bar on channels with clear moments is a manageable next step.
- Test Interactive SSAI on existing spots. Confirm that your SSAI stream carries timed metadata the app can pass to the SDK.
- Set controls and reporting first. Configure eligibility, pacing and closing rules in StreamLayer Studio, and agree on reporting before launch.
Frequently asked questions
Can a FAST channel owner run StreamLayer ads on Samsung TV Plus, The Roku Channel or Pluto TV?
Not on its own. The StreamLayer SDK must run inside the app, and those platforms control their apps. A channel owner can work with the platform, or use Interactive SSAI where the platform app supports it.
Does StreamLayer replace our SSAI provider?
No. StreamLayer works alongside existing SSAI, ad servers, SSPs and DSPs. The SSAI provider keeps stitching and delivering video ads, and StreamLayer adds units rendered in the app.
Do pause ads work on linear FAST channels?
Only where the player lets viewers pause the channel. Pause Ads work wherever the app supports pausing, and VOD libraries are the most common starting point.
Does StreamLayer modify the FAST channel's video stream?
No. StreamLayer does not stitch new video into the stream or modify it. Units are rendered by the SDK in the app, alongside the stream.
