How to Estimate Incremental Ad Inventory in Live Sports

Updated September 8, 2026 · StreamLayer
How much incremental inventory does a live sports broadcast contain?
There is no universal number of monetizable minutes per game. The opportunity depends on the sport, production, distribution rights, audience, existing sponsorships, and viewer protections. Time outside a commercial break is not automatically available advertising inventory.
Audit representative broadcasts
Review a sample of events and label candidate moments, their actual durations, the accompanying program coverage, and existing sponsor commitments. Include ordinary games as well as major events.
Exclude sensitive editorial situations and moments when an ad would cover important action, captions, or graphics. Record why opportunities were excluded so a revenue model does not silently assume all stoppages are usable.
Convert moments into eligible impressions
For each selected format, determine which viewers and devices can receive it. Apply frequency limits, pacing, campaign eligibility, and creative readiness. A game may contain many candidate moments while an individual viewer remains eligible for only a few.
Pause inventory requires separate modeling because the viewer initiates the pause. Where an app does not support pause or time-shifted playback, that opportunity may not exist.
Model sales and delivery separately
Start with eligible opportunities, estimate paid fill, and account for successful delivery. Multiply delivered billable impressions by the realized CPM and divide by 1,000 to estimate gross media revenue. Include creative, platform, and operating costs when estimating net revenue.
Use low, central, and high scenarios with clearly stated assumptions. Do not present a scenario as a measured result or project one broadcast’s behavior across an entire league without representative evidence.
Distinguish new placements from enhanced placements
A selected nonlinear Live Moment Ad or eligible Pause Ad can add an advertising opportunity. An Interactive SSAI companion enhances an existing spot and may support premium packaging; it does not automatically create another billable impression.
Existing broadcast sponsorships, rights restrictions, and displaced revenue all affect whether the commercial value is truly incremental.
Validate the model in a pilot
Compare predicted opportunities with actual eligible requests, renderings, paid impressions, and revenue. Review sessions and playback alongside commercial performance. Tighten assumptions when the real audience or campaign behavior differs from the plan.
